This is unrelated, but I have a turn siginal switch that does not return. I've removed the steering wheel from older 5 series but the air bag scares me. How did you get to the retaining nut?

: I had a similar problem with my 1990 535i.

: I removed the steering wheel and found that my problem was not with the ignition switch but with the steering wheel locking mechanism. I sprayed a graphite based lubricant on the lever between ignition switch and steering locking pin. That lever move when you turn the key and disengage the pin from the dented ring in the wheel. The contraption as been working flawlesly since that time, about 8 months ago.
