Down side to chipping a 525i??? (archive)

Gotta '95 525i auto (SWMBO had to have a damn self shifty). It's not very quick, but handles well as ya'll know. The car now have 50k miles. If I do chip it what will happen to:

1. The engine life. I fully expect to keep the car well over 100k. (Had an '86 325 w/ 170k until totaled). Will it effect the reliable life of the engine?

2. How does chipping one affect the gas mileage?

3. Should the maintence interval be reduced?

4. What kinda performance enhancement can I reasonably expect?

5. Which chip is best?

One more question - Does anyone use the "manual" mode on the auto tranny and actually shift manually? I find ya really gotta git the timing exactly right to avoid overreving due to a delay from the time you move the lever and the time the trans actually shifts. Also you have to be really careful to move the lever to the desired gear - it's very easy to move it too far, especially when trying to smoke that camero.....
