A while back there was a thread about scratches on the center console wood trim. My "new" used 540 had scratches on the trim and looked dull. I thought about this problem and finally had the guts to attempt a solution. I am satisfied with the results.
I used a fine sponge (a nurse freind gave it to me. It is 1.5x1 inch and has a handle. They use it to apply iodine antiseptic before doing a spinal puncture.) to apply a paste varnish. The clear varnish is from the bartley company which makes furniture reproductions (1-800-227-8539).
Take the sponge and touch it to the varnish. do not get to much on the sponge. take the sponge and blot it on some clean paper to penetrate the sponge and remove excess varnish. then apply a very thin coat of varnish to the wood trim. I taped the surrounding shifter boot cover and the console since I do not know how to remove the trim. You will need to apply several coats to get a smooth finish. Although, I have not done this yet the fine finish lines left by the varnish can be smoothed out by rubbing with very fine steel wool and then applying another coat of varnish. The results I have seen are a great improvement over what the trim looked like before refinishing.
