I got an aftermarket alarm installed in my '91 E34. It is an Alpine model and it has the basic functions. For that price you will have many options including Clifford. Mine kills the ignition, has dual shock sensor, lock the doors, blinks parking lights and chirps.
You can get it for less than $300 installed or you can buy that type of unit for about $150-200 and if you feel comfortable install it yourself. The window/roof closing feature requires an additional $100 (for the delay unit).
If I was to spend $250-300, I would go for an aftermarket but this is my opinion.

: I know for a fact that my '90 535i has a factory alarm, located in the steering column. I went to the local dealership, and they said it would cost me about $250 to get another remote, $300+ if it didn't catch the code on the first try, or something... is this my only option for a remote??? I could get a decent, brand new aftermarket system installed for less than that! Any ideas?

: Thanks!
