I was under the impression that the new 3's have computer-involved "drive by wire" giving a different driving response than the 540's traditional bellcrank operated butterfly valve. At low revs the computer cranks open more throttle to make up for the lower available torque.
Of course auto trans differences could be large part of the different impression.
As for the other post, I for one like the rush of acceleration from my BMW, and it's not a 540 - there aren't a lot of curves on the drive to work to fully enjoy the handling.
