: : : I just noticed the black trim around the back windshield has popped up about an eighth of an inch. It looks like there is some kind of clip underneath. When I tried to press it back down it wouldn't stay. I didn't want to disturb it too much until I could find out what was happening to it. If you have any ideas let me know before I go exploring. Thanks. Jr 89 535iA 116000
: : The clip that attach the trim to the glazing are now at the age where they just break and release the trim. If you neglect the broken clips the molding will blow off and the job will become more expensive. The part number for the clips is 51 31 8 177 850. I paid $2.25 for each clip. There are some 16 or so clips on each window (windshield and rear window).
: : They are typically installed when the glazing is being installed. They can be installed after, if you know how to modify the clips and the installation technique. If you are going to attempt the job yourself, I may be able to provide instructions on how to modify the clips, remove the old clips and install the new ones.
: : When I heard the price for parts and labor from the dealer to do this job, like always I became even more motivated to do it myself.
: JR, if you're talking about the black trim at the top of the rear glass, mine was loose on one side also, it let's loose from being baked all day and washing your car too much ;^) If you want the quick fix (my way most of the time with 2 kids), i just pulled it up enough to get the tip of the super glue applicator in, then taped it till dry, has held great for over two years.
: Superglue is definitely in the Top 10 for mankind's best inventions this century.
: p.s. It's probably that new sound system that rattled it loose!
Good idea ron! I didn't even think about using the ol'standby, and yes it is at the top of the back windshield where the trim has popped up. You're on target about the children, ( I also have 2.) here is the kicker...in the next few days my wife and I are expecting twins!!! Now you understand my appreciation for your value engineering. Thanks again, Jr.
