Actually I am not sure how anyone can avoid this. Assuming I do have a blown head gausket, I have not idea how it got that way. I changed the oil every 3K. My wife and I never race the car, as a matter of fact we've never driven over 100mph and never go over 5000RPMs. We have never seen the temp indicator go above mid range.

DOn't know if some models are prone to this.
Did not see any signs and don't know how to prevent this.
Sorry I couldn't be of much help.
Had I known any means of preventing this mess I would have taken such action.
