A tough one this one. The Trans Program warning used to show up - on an 88 735i I used to run - completely out of the blue and for no reaso. That had a different make of gearbox, but electronic gremlins are no respecters of mechanical characteristics. A typical cause of the Trans Program warning is if the throttle position sensor comes loose (which may also explain your 'holding back' phenomenon). A few minutes to clean the contacts and refit, so don't let the dealer clean you out if this does, indeed, turn out to be the problem.

I would have thought that if the autobox runs fine, and changes 1-2-3-4-3-2-1 properly with no slippage, overrevving-between-gears or jerking, that the 'holding back' you describe is unrelated to the gearbox's behaviour. Have you switched fuel grades/suppliers recently perchance?

Finally, there is a possibility that the autobox's top gear lock-up is engaging/disengaging incorrectly. This lock-up reduces power loss through the fluid torque convertor by essentially turning it into a solid coupling. If this doesn't *dis*engage correctly, acceleration in top may be sluggish unless you push the kickdown switch in to engage 3rd or 2nd. If it never *en*gages properly, the gearbox seems to 'slip' excessively in top gear when accelerating.

Either way I don't think you are in for any big bills - the 'box is a solidly-made GM unit, 1995 is still young, and if the car hasnt been caned I wouldn't worry about it too much. But watch for that strange lock-up behaviour and try to determine the exact behaviour of the gearbox if and when your Trans Program light comes on.

: Hi,

: I have a 1995 525i. Two weeks ago I had the Trans Module light come on. I took the car to the dealer and he said he could not find a problem. But, it still comes on occassionally. The car rides fine with the exception of the feeling that it is 'holding back' a bit. I'm not sure if it is me thinking something is going to go or if there is a problem. The tranny shifts through all gears fine (it's an auto). I can drive 75-85 with no sweat. But, I'd like some input on the roblem if anyone knows.
: Thanks
