Eric gets points for "Advanced Touchup 420". ;)
: : Here are some hints I've found helpful when doing touchup on a car.
: : 1 - the objective is to FLOW the touchup paint INTO the chip. DO NOT ever 'paint' with the brush. Touch up paint should NEVER exceed the lip of the chip.
: : 2 - make sure the t/u paint is right consistancy to 'flow'. add some laquer thinner or something if necessary. stringy paint is bad bad bad!
: : 3 - a moderate temperature day is best. Stay out of direct sun, keep the car cool. Refresh the paint on the t/u brush every 30 seconds or so. If it gets too hot, the paint will dry out and get stringy, ruining the 'flow'.
: : 4 - don't try to fill the chip all at once. you may have to go back and fill the same chip several times to get a level surface.
: : 5 - don't try to do all the chips, just get the big obvious ones. touchup is a game where you have to strike the right balance between covering the chip and making your hood look liked a dot factory. trust me, everyone sees less chips than you do...excercise restraint and just go after the really really obvious ones.
: : hope this helps.....

: I agree with the above but would add a few extra ideas...First clean and scrape out very well with tip of a small nail or other small pointy object being sure to open up edges and scape away any hidden rust creep (the chip will get bigger). If you have clearcoat, don't fill chip all the way with the color; save some room to fill with clearcoat at the end. Overfill just a touch then sand smooth with wet #600 emory cloth (punch out a piece with a hole puncher and glue to the end of a pencil eraser). Then smooth out scratches with rubbing compound then progressively less abrasive polishing compounds (Meguire's fine cut cleaner, polish, etc.)It takes time but with practice you can make them almost disappear. Good Luck
