: I have a 1989 535i manual, with the same display. After reading Rob's advice that it may be a faulty brake light switch, I went to a dealer to purchase this switch. Before i could take the switch the Mach said that the function of the brake light switch is only to light up the brake lights and nothing else. if my brake lights were working when the brake pedal is depressed than the fault is the check control module that has to be relaced. here in south Africa, the unit costs in access of 1000 Rands. I ma anxious to know what was your out come because your brake lights are working as well.
