I sunk perf mod $ into an 89 535 w/60k and still have it 5 years (60k mi)later. Expect occasional expensive repairs (currently have a leaking head gasket) and maybe $300/yr maintenance, but it's still cheaper than a new lease. Have had a 525 for 5 years as well, no major problems.

: I have a 1995 540iA with 55K miles and about 25K miles since it had its Alusil block installed. The car has been flawless since I have owned it (about 14 months and 12K miles). Before I start sinking money into an upgraded suspension, exhaust and chip, I would like to know if the E34, in general, is a good long-term keeper. I always get nervous when my extended warranty expires (in this case in 5/2001). My alternative is to make no upgrades and trade up to a 1998 E39 6-speed sport in 2001 (although I don't like the appearance of the E39 as well). Any insight from owners of older high mileage E34's would be appreciated.
