I've been travelling down this path as well.

The feedback I've gotten is that there was a bad batch of coils out there on the earlier e34's that can cause this to occur. Let me guess...

1) stairstep surging on acceleration? Kinda on/off/on again?
2) MPG gauge moves up and down although you keep your foot steady on the gas?
3) moderate loss of power?

These are the symptoms I described to Callan, and given his level of expertise and the fact that he suggested that the coils might cause this, I tend to believe that's what the problem probably is.

Check your coils to see whether they are dated DEC94 (?) or before. If so, they're candidates.

Someday, I'll get around to checking mine...
