I recently had an overheating problem with my 535i.
It was determined that both the fan clutch and aux fan were faulty. My dealer replaced the fan clutch. I repaired the aux fan myself by a) replacing the blown fuse, and b) replacing the resistor. Replacement of the resistor does NOT require removal of the bumper. I was able to replace mine by reaching in through the towing eye panel next to the left front fog light. It took about 1 hour/beer.
Good Luck
