I removed the glops of resin surrounding the resistors and removed all four resistors. All four were 4.7k ohm resistors (bands: yellow purple red gold).
Two of the resistors had resistance ratings outside the 5% tolerance spec. However, they seemed functional. I will replace all four today and see what happens. I will also check all the solder joints if the new resistors dont work.
I have done more research into possible causes of the 1-3 settings failure. In the BMW repair FAQ (#12 for older 7 series) I found people discussing the failure of the transistors found right next to the resistors. If anyone one has any info on these transistors it would be much appreciated.
If replacing the resistors and checking the solder joints does not work I am going to drill out the rivets holding the huge heat sink to the circuit board and examine the transistors. If I can identify them I will replace them, along with replacing the rivets with threaded screws.
If this doesnt work I am going to have an electrical engineer friend of mine look at the board.
We gotta get rebuilding these things down to a science so everyone can benefit and not have to pay the rediculous amount of money required to replace less than $5 worth of components.
I'll keep everbody updated. Keep your fingers crossed. Gotta love this message board!
