Having opened the ignition assembly a few months ago, I cannot see how the ignition switch was bad and causing the key not to turn. This is a classic sign where the barrel tabs were bent slightly before. As you turned the key over a period of weeks (sometimes forcing it?) you may have bent the tabs beyond the point where the keys can turn. Replacing the switch was caused by the locksmith, not you. Checkout previous message "true of false" below.
My initial impression would have been that the ignition barrel needed to be removed and the internal tabs replaced. The barrel is similar to those you find in a door lock.
