This happened to me in April 1999 -- and the BMW dealer insisted it needed a new ignition lock ($300 from Germany) plus installation. I checked this bulletin board and learned that real problem was likely the steering column tumblers -- that needed graphite or silicon lubricant -- and not a new ignition lock. I told the dealer this and asked them to first pull the steering wheel and lubricate the tumblers. They were bent on selling me a new ignition lock and instead left my car sit on the lot for five days -- right where the tow truch dropped it. At that point I towed car to independent mechanic. In 90-minutes he had problem fixed! It just needed lubricant on the steering column (lock) tumbler mechanism --- NOT a new ignition lock. Cost: 90-minutes and $120. (plus five days' car rental and aggravation).
Good luck!!! DJDolan
