Here is some info for all you E34 folks about what to expect when this occurs. These were the symptoms; one bright sunny morning after I started my 89 535i 5 speed 89K, my tach worked and my speedometer worked but all elso on the instrument cluster was dead. No gas gauge, water temp check control, MPG gauge, odometer or trip meter. Every time I would touch the brake pedal the check alarm would go off. It was very nerve wracking. I shut the car off, checked all fuses, pulled the check control relay, restarted the car and the same occurred.
As I was driving to the dealer, in the space where the odometer was came the numbers 8, then 88.
I realized at this time that I have just become a member of the dreaded instrument cluster board failure club.
I thought I would just order one from Programa and do it myself, but the airbag really scared me, and I figured if I screwed up there goes a $600 board.
So yes I took it in and my dealer diagnosed it as the instrument cluster board and odometer coding plug went out. They ordered the parts and two days later I received my car back with all new parts in the instrument cluster and an odometer that started over a 0 miles. Darn, they had to stick a sticker on the door and under the hood that the car really has 89K plus whatever is on the new odometer.
But hey it is neat to be driving a 10 year old car with 92 miles on it now.
By the way, I am also $1000 poorer for this fix but this has been the largest bill ever on this car which is paid for, and I know I cannot get a nicer car to replace this one for $1000.
If any of these symptoms occur for you, this is what it was. Good Luck.
