Brad,

If your car and steering wheel shakes when driving over bumps or uneven roads etc, you need tot replace your bushings at the front end. It's a common problem.
Now it's also a common problem that the E34 has much play at the steering box but that can be adjusted, but that would make your car wander when driving straight and NOT shaky when driving over bumps.

: When I drive over a bump, uneven raod or pothole it feels like the front of the car is not touching the ground and the streering wheel jumps around. Otherwise, the car drives and handles wonderfully(i.e. braking, cornering, touring, etc.).

: : Assuming the issue is just one of steering play, then usually the play can be adjusted out very simply, with an adjustment in the steering box, and possibly a tighten-up of the flexible coupling in the steering column. This shouldn't take more than an hour at a competent workshop, and it is possible to do yourself (but others will be better qualified to give you directions.)
