I have a similar problem in my 91 525ia. I have been told on several occasions that this can be caused by a failed or failing coil. Apparently, there was a batch that does this, dated Dec 95 (?) or earlier.

You might want to check to see whether you have any of these coils.

If you are interested in further details, you could search the archive here for "coil" or "surge" or something like that. You'll probably find the threads that addressed this issue and Callan's response to me on this exact question.
