Dan: my 94 530i did exactly the same thing. There is a bi-metallic strip that acts as overheat protection in the resistor box that is the cause of the intermittent operation. It only affect speeds 1-3, and when you run in 4 it cools down and allows 1-3 to work for a while. I can explain the theory of this if you want, but the simple answer is to go get the resistor module for about $17 and replace it. The BMW part # for my car was 64-11-1-468-524. I had posted directions on how to do it for the 94 on 9/3/99, so they should be in the archives for this board. Let me know if you need more help. This is relatively easy and cheap to fix if you have a couple of hours to spend on your hands and knees.

: my 94 530i/5 air conditioning (and heat) fan shuts off sometimes when in positions 1-3. Position 4 always works. I know fans use a little resistor (or something like that)to make the low ranges work. However, my experience has been when the resistor goes, nothing but the high speed will work. My current problem is intermittent. Usually at a stop light, when the A/C is on 2 or 3, it will suddenly all but stop until I head down the road....

: Any suggestions?
