It is necessary as BMW now runs scheduled oil changes at around 15K mile intervals. They insist on synthetic as a conventional oil would break down over that period. If it is your car, You can do what you want, but they probably will not warranty any engine damages unless you follow their rules. Besides, BMW synthetic is only $2.32 /qt with a CCA discount at the local stealer.

: I was in a dealership today shopping a new 5 series. The service advisor indicated that the new 5s require synthetic oil.
