And coming from an owner who returned to his parked car that somebody had hit, I can say that it could've been worse. At least the perp stuck around and the police have a report filed.

: Got a call in my office last Friday afternoon to go down to the parking lot right away. Went down to see what was up and found my car pulled about four feet out of its space (it was backed in) with a dent in the left front fender aft of the parking light housing, and with the front bumper/air dam lying on the ground ahead of the car with the foglight/outside temp probe/side marker light wires and connectors all hanging loose. (Actually, the steel bumper itself was still attached to the car, only the outer covering and air dam were torn off.)
: Foutunately the police and the other driver were both still there. He was an old and befuddled guy (72) driving a conversion van. He was trying to turn around in the tight lot and hooked his rear bumper on my front one and ripped it off as he tried to pull away.
: The good news is that my car ('90 535i(m) 208K miles) was due to go into the body shop that very weekend for re-painting and some other minor body work. Great timing, actually. But I had to drive the car from Baltimore (where I work) to Pittsburgh (where I live on weekends and where the body work is being done) sans bumper and looking at "F/FOG LIGHT" and "-35F" all the way. Humiliating, but successful.
: Bottom line: the insurance company will now pay for my rental car! Not bad.
