Do you realize how much work (and $$$) that would be. The engine itself will be expensive, but you will also need all of the eltronics (injectors, control units, O2 sensor, etc, etc.) and wiring harnesses that go along with it. That crap is insanely expensive. You'll spend a lot of money and still have a 1980 5 series.

In my opinion, and I am by no means an expert, you should either find the same engine as you had (or atleast one with the same electronic controls) or buy a different car.
