My brother's M5 was doing the same thing earlier in the month, except on a larger scale. 1 qt/500 miles or so. No smoke, no drips?? Thought maybe it was burning because it was Mobil 1 and it would be difficult to see. Took it to our trusted mechanic who said he could not find a big problem with the engine. But did find a bolt that was not torqued down enough. He cleaned the area that was leaking oil somewhere internally and tightened the bolt to specs. Voila, happy S38 and brother!! Moral of the story, make sure you have a trusted mechanic that knows what s/he is doing before they start replacing expensive parts that are still good. Also, check the oil pressure sensor as sometimes they start to leak and spray oil out the side of the engine as you drive down the road. Will not be able to see a trail or anything as you are moving too quickly.
'90 525i -- Not an M5 :o( :o(
: My '92 525i(m) seems to have an appetite. Yet I can't locate any "tell tale signs".
: The facts:
: ~1qt oil/1200miles
: No black spot in the drive way
: No black smoke out the tail pipe
: Where is it going !!
: Anybody have some M50 experiences to share. I'm open to any educated guesses as well.
: P.S. My car has 2 of the "classic" E34 problems...door panel vinyl coming unglued, the slightly rocking drivers seat rails, and the sword/fan speed BS. Beyond that, this car provides the most enjoyable drive I have ever know. It continues to thrill me every time I take it out. So, help me keep it. This oil issue has got to go.
