Judging from your e-mail ID you may be in California. Darned if I can find it in perusing the California Air Resources Board site, but seems to me you can't legally swap an earlier engine into a later car, i.e., the engine must be same year or newer than the car for emissions purposes. I may be wrong, as I can't find the regulation.
You didn't say the year of your E36. I suppose if you have a '92 or '93 engine going into a '92 E36, or a '93 engine going into a '93 E36, then you'll "only" have the size matters/DME matters matters.
Or, you could just buy my turbo. :-)
