It's illegal where I live too, but I always coast in neutral to stoplights where I know I'll be sitting for a while. I only bother to downshift if I know the light is about to change or I'm going to make an immediate turn. Hey, brakes are cheaper to replace than engines/trannies! But then again, there's nothing legal about my car nowadays. Illegal tint, no license plate in front, and a Valentine 1 detector hard-wired into my car (I'm in VA where using your cupholder is illegal).
