Personally, I'd take a turbo boost pressure (BAR) gauge instead, like I had on my Porsche 944 Turbo. Now THAT was a lot more fun to watch than this silly MPG gauge. It moved in all the right directions when I stomped on the gas! :) Of course, I'd need a turbo too.

I think this MPG gauge does have some psychological/ecological benefit in making me conscious/feel guilty about cruising at 20 MPG when I know I can ease off the throttle a bit and get 25 MPG. Jst my .000002 cents.
