My '94 540ia developed a strange problem this morning. Immediately after having the car washed (I know I should do it by hand, but it's cold here in Michigan today), the kid at the carwash tried to start the car in neutral but it wouldn't fire. It started up a minute later after we rolled it away. Then when driving it away it shifted up through the gears but it will not automaticlly engage in 5th (overdrive). If I pull the shifter down into 4th and then push it back to "D" it will made the upshift. Are the two envents related? did the water wich probably made the car start difficultly also somehow affect the electronic shift program? I'd appreciate any ideas before I take this thing to the dealer for evaluation.
