Flexiable Disk Coupling (archive)

I had my 95 525ia in for service today. It has 40K miles and is exactly 5 years old. The dealer told me that the flexiable Disk Coupling is cracking and should be replaced in the near future.

How do I tell if it time to replace or just the dealer drumming up extra billable work? BTW, the estimate was $217 for the part and 2.7 hours labor.

Thanks,
