: I'm looking at a 1989 535i. Body and interior are in beautiful shape, but it's got 124,000 miles on it. There is a slight rattle from the left front when driving over even very small bumps, so I am thinking that and other things will need mechanical attention soon. Are there any problem areas for the '89s, and what can I expect to happen from 124,000 miles on. I'd like to keep it until it dies.

I bought an 89 535i 2 years ago with 50000 miles and have put on about 30000. I used every service and maintainance opportunity to upgrade the car. Instead of new shocks, I put in a Dinan Stage one suspension with 750 bushings, Autothority chip, etc.
I put 3000 dollars into the car when I bought it and it has run flawlessly. No electronic glitches.
You must have the car looked at by a good independent mechanic.
I did not use an aftermarket exhaust. I stayed with OEM.
