Welcome to Bimmerland.
Absolutely agree...try your Microfilter first and
make sure you are getting the proper fan speed on the dial. The heating system on our cars are quite finicky but they do work well. After the microfilter replacement, if it is still bad, I would ensure that you bleed it thoroughly before looking at more serious concerns.
