I don't know if this expression is used in the US, but here in the UK we call them Jealousy stripes.
Out of all the cars I've owned, only my BMW's have recieved them. My current E32 730i has 2, one down the side similar to, but not as deep as the one you described; the other runs the length of the hood. My 'stripes' arrived within 3 months of owning and parking this car in central London. I have resigned myself to keeping them since repairing them would only leave a pristine car ready to be 'striped' again. So they stay and I haven't recieved any more...
I have always had a fantasy that I could catch one of those b**tards in the process of doing one... but I'm never that lucky...
