I had a 2.1L turbo volvo that ran 350 bhp (check on chassis dyno) at the rear wheels on 18# boost, stock internals. Volvo builds a turbo engine, they don't add a turbo to their regular engine - for instance, sodium cooled exhaust valves and oil coolers on the turbo models.

Ran it that way for 30,000 miles, then turned down the boost - couldn't afford the 93 octane gas and sold the goodies (new computer, wastegate controler and ping detector plus a few others) to another owner.

It can be done, and done right, it will last 100,000 miles. I now tow a 4000# boat with a 940 Volvo with a 2.3 turbo at highway speeds - 120K miles on it and going strong. Runs 220 bhp, tows better than any SUV I've used. Of course, compared to my 525i, it handles like an SUV!!!!

: This is interesting. I have a friend who is currently transplanting a 4.5 Turbo (taking from a special ed. 745i Euro) into a E34 manual. Estimated 400+ bhp.
