I installed the thick plastic adhesive style (purchased from Bavarian Autosport) recently. My car has 105 kmi on it and headlights have a slight amount of pitting. Besides protection, I found the plastic also "smoothed out" much of the minor pitting on the lenses; they now look almost like new! BTW, I've had the "cone" style headlight protectors on my E30 M3 for a couple years and can't recommend them. Besides the looks, they also tend to get hazy with age and sometimes have condensation on the inner surface in wet conditions.
