: I have an 87 325e auto, that I really dont like. The engine has no guts at all, and it only revs to 4800 RPM. Not exactly high performance hardware if you know what I mean. The engine would be ok if I had a manual tranny, but I have an auto so driving it is like torture for me, as I love a good stickshift. I am going to sell the car and buy another used Bimmer, one that has a five speed. I really like the e34 535i's and the prices I have seen are very good. My other option is an e30 325i w/a 5 speed.
: My questions are pretty simple. What do I need to look out for in buying a used 535i? I know the engines and trannies are pretty strong, but its always the little things that cause the most trouble. How do these cars hold up in general over the years? My E30 has held up very well, and I constantly thrash it to get the most of its miniscule performance. I also plan on adding some performance mods to the car, so what kind of performance can I expect from various mods?

I was just flipping some pages last night in the photo classifieds--Richmond VA area. I haven't seen this car personally, but the photo looks like it's in nice shape. Here's what the ad reads--
1990 535, 5 sp, cc, tw, cass, alloy wheels, fully loaded, black w/grey leather, all service records, has over 100k miles, $6800, va dealer, (804) 354-8222
Price seems very fair. I'd be glad to test pilot it if one of you are interested ;^)
