: : Recently had head gasket replaced. Ever since, gas mileage has dropped from an average of 20 mpg (city and highway combined) to 14-15 mpg. Why is this and how can I fix? Thanks very much. Happy Holidays to all!! DJD in KY.

: On December 20th, you posted that you thought that the repair to the headgasket was not suceessful, and that maybe the head was cracked. Are you now convinced it is ok? If it is cracked, the car will not run properly (duh) and the mileage will suffer.

Sunday, December 26th: Just returned from 250 mile roundtrip -- mostly higway at 70mph. Averaged 22.5 mpg -- which is very respectable. To answer your question about head: Went back to original mechanic, who, after checking all aspects of engine for several hours, concluded that there is NO crack in head -0- as alleged by competitor mechanic. All "vitals" such as tenperature, fluid levels, idle, seem to be in spec. So, unless something unusual happens, I'll just have to assume that the head is not cracked (mechanic #1 said he sent out and had pressure tested -- okay -- when gasket replaced.) In short, everything seems now to be "in order". Many thanks to all who showed interest. DJD in KY
