There's an adjuster nut on the steering box that will take out the steering wheel play (mine was about 2" either way). Apparently it's hard to get at. I don't have facilities to work on the car myself so can't tell you for sure.

I now have no perceptible steering play.

There were also some comments on this board that the large nut on the steering column (near the brake pedal, under the dashboard) can come loose and result in steering play. This is presumably part of the steering column telescoping mechanism, designed to collapse during accidents. So I imagine it has a tightly specified torque tolerance.
