I have a '94 530i, Nikasil. Used to have an '88 735i. Both clutch. I have these thoughts.
530i. Block is just a price issue. Engine is lower maintenance (a plus) but requires premium fuel (a minus). 32-valve top end produces low tip-in power, makes stick shift car a little less driveable.
535i. Old 12-valve six is smooth and pulls very nicely from low rpms.
Other things being equal, and as time goes by they more and more are equal, I would lean to the 535i. Loved that motor!
