The 8 might be lower maintinance, but not by much. I take my 535i to the dealer for service and every 15K miles, the perform a valve adjustment. It's not very expensive, but to be honest, you don't buy a BMW if you are concerned about affording it.
If you are mechanically inclined, the straight 6 is easy.

I was considering upgrading to a 540i (95) that my dealer had just aquired, but my tech told me to stay away from E34 V8's. He said they can't touch my 535i for reliability. That's just one techs advice, but ask the people who work on BMW's there advice.
