I have an emerging "vibration" in the driveline of my 90 535i. Gear selector vibrates in 4th gear, varies with engine load on acceleration & deceleration, no chassis vibration at this time.
Car has 86k miles. 5 speed. Have not done an undercar inspection because it's my understanding that to do a full driveline inspection requires that you drop the exhaust system AND fully remove the drive line to check the u-joints (per Callan in the archives).
Here's the question: Do you -
Option 1: Order a rebuilt driveline and just plan to swap. Forego the inspection and assume the current is no-good? New driveline is $340 plus $60 shipping (includes core return). Pros are new driveline, do job in one shot. Risk is you don't need a new driveline and spend too much money. Worst case is that problem is misdiagnosed and NOT the driveline at all!
Option 2: Do a full inspection & discover the driveline is bad. Put the entire car back together while waiting for the new driveline (must order) and essentially do the job twice? Pros are you might save some $$ by only replacing what's needed, ensure diagnosis of driveline is correct. Cons are you basically have to do the job twice and you still have an old driveline with selected new parts.
I'm planning to replace the guibo and tranny mounts in all cases. They are sunk costs. Any other parts while I'm there? Considering doing the O2 sensor also although car runs fine.
What option would you choose if you were in my shoes? Is there another option if haven't considered?
How risky is my current diagnosis that the problem IS my driveline?
The car's a daily driver so I can't afford a 3-5 day down time.
