I bought a 1994 540i last month, so I've just been-there-done-that. Check that all of the electrical items and climate control work. There are a lot of cool little features on the car that if you don't know about you won't think to test. For example, you can close the windows using the key from outside the car. Unfortunately this does't work on my car. Check out the sound system. Thoroughly. It wasn't until I put a CD in the changer and cranked it that I realized that one of my rear speakers was blown.
As always, check the maintenance records on the car. If the car was BMW dealer maintained you may be able to talk to a service advisor and get all the previous owners records and repair history.
Pull up the back seat and make sure that the battery hasn't been leaking all over the place. One that I looked at had a really messy battery compartment.
This is going to sound stupid, but make sure it has a 5th alloy wheel for a spare. One that I looked at didn't. And the dealer (it wasn't a BMW dealer) tried to tell me that they didn't come with a full size spare. That's a lie.
Run a CarFax check on the vehicle, if that service is available in Canada.
Last, but not least, be picky. There are plenty of E34s out there. And enjoy the grin it adds to your daily commute.
