Which transmission? The earlier E34s use the ZF4HP22, which is used in a lot of Euro cars (volvo, peugeot, alfa, rover etc). There have been many horror stories about the ZF4HP22 but most of them seem to involve autoboxes that died at an early age. I've had two cars with that autobox now and both of them were still going strong well past 100K miles. I do change the fluid and filter often though.

I dont know anything about the later autobox. I've
heard it's a GM unit but don't quote me on that. You can tell a car with the ZF4HP22 because it has a switch to select manual or automatic mode.
