: I have a 90 525i, driver's side door lock does not work from outside car while trying to unlock. When key is inserted into door and turned to the unlock position, I hear all doors click, but doors do not unlock. I do the same on the passenger side, and the locks open for 1 sec. and goes back to lock position again. In order to enter the car after locked: I turn key to unlock on passenger side while lifting door handle quickly before locks go down again. I now have to enter car on passenger side and pull up the driver's side lock from the inside. Now, the car is unlocked and all locks remain unlocked. This problem is driving me crazy. I've had the door all apart. Nothing was disconnected, loose, or broken. I thought maybe a push/pull rod or something was disconnected, but not the case. Dealership parts guy says it "MAY" be the lock activator, but could be in any of the doors and they are all different. So, at $200. a pop, I'm not about to try this on a maybe. Has anyone had this problem that can help me???? Any ideas????
It the actuator on the drivers side that is not working. Because the actuator does not operate, the "close" contacts do not open and consequently electricity is still on the "close" line. When you opere the pass door you energize the "open" line and operate all the door actuators, except the failed one and because it is still in the "closed" mode it sends a close signal to the system and closes all doors again. Note that if you open the drivers door from the inside you should be able to lock and unlock the car (except the drivers door) from the outside. You should also be able to confirm this by disconnecting the driver's door actuator. Actually you could use the car that way until you get a new actuator installed, but then you would always have to lock the driver's door manually and enter and lock the car from the pax side.
I had similar problem on my 525 when the actuator for the trunk lid failed. Replaced it with an original part that costed $66.45 at Motorwerks. Bloomington (Minneapolis), MN. Do not know how much the one for the front doors costs, but should be less than $100.
The Front Door Actuator P/N is 51 26 8 356 065 (up to 09/91).
It is worth noting that it is only the actuators on the front doors annd the trunk that can cause a fault like this. The actuators on lthe rear doors do not have any microswitches (contacts).
If you need more detailed information on the operation of the system, feel fre to drop me an e-mail.
