: Hi- a new short block at 70 k?? is this typical? I am currently looking at possibly buying a '95 530 w/ 40,000 mi (dealer wants $24 k, car is cherry) I worry a bit about the cost and reliability of this particular powerplant. Any comments?

: : I am getting the short block replaced on my 530i,

: : Thanks

I'm on a mailing list with about 60 other 530 owners. Last check, less than half of us had block replacements. Even for those of us that had block replacements, our cars ran fine with the old block except perhaps for a slightly rougher idle. Several are over 100,000 mi with the original block. I would have the dealer do a leakdown test on the car and if it came out good I wouldn't hesitate to buy it and use premium gas to guard against future deterioration. Should it fail the test, buy it and have the new block put in for free. These are great cars!
