If you've got a decent library nearby, see if they have the July '97 issue of Consumer Reports. These guys bought 25 GM crate engines, disassembled them, weighed some components, and then performed a very in depth test on various oils, including Mobil 1. Their major finding...any SAE approved oil is good for 6,000 mile intervals at the minimum. They found absolutely no difference between changes at 3,000 and 6,000. They also said that Mobil 1 was only good for vehicles operating in either extreme heat or cold.

The thing I liked is how methodical they performed the testing...using taxi cabs no less! Believe me, it's worth your time to read the article. My reaction...I still change my Castrol 20W-50 every 3,000-3,500 miles. Old habits die hard, eh???
