Radio Not Working (archive)

I just replaced the original battery on my 91 535i. After the battery was installed, it naturally required the "CODE" to be entered. I entered the code and the radio came on. Everything seemed fine. However, the next time I started the car and every time since, the radio lights up with the station numbers showing, but there is no sound and I can't change bands (to FM, CD, or even Weather). I am able to push the seek buttons and they sometimes work to change the numbers that show. Any ideas on how I can fix this? Thank you!

More info - if this helps.
Over the Holidays I detailed my car. I had the CD play er going and after about an hour everything shut down. I thought that I had a weak battery because I did not have enough power to restart the engine. Fortunately, I have a 5 speed, so it was easy to back the car down the driveway and start the car by letting out the clutch.

Everything seemed okay for a couple of weeks. (I hadn't tryed running the radio when the engine wasn't running again.) Then I started seeing the CODE message again on my radio - every morning.

I took my car in for service to get an oil leak on my valve cover fixed and had my (independent) mechanic check into the electrical system. He didn't find anything wrong, but recommended a new battery. After I picked up the car, I could not get the radio to work by entering the code. The BMW instructions seem to indicate that after three attempts, the radio must be on for 1 hour before you can re-enter the code. My commute isn't that long and didn't have a chance to do this prior to replacing the battery.
