Just as with the automatic trannies, lack of maintenance is the biggist culprit of failure.
You HAVE to do regular fluid changes. I know the autos are every 15K unless you use synthetic, then every 30K. 2 years reguardless of millage. I beleive that the sticks follow the same fluid change schedual.

It's real easy, look in your owners manual.
