There is a plastic tab protruding from that panel towards the center of the car. You just press it in and the panel releases. About airbox temperatures, there is a regular poster on the Z3 board. He wrote a long article about how he ducted cool air from the front of the car that he posted on a Z3 website. You could probably contact him if you post on bimmer.org's Z3 section. His name is Shawn Fogg.

This was installed on a purely racing 3 series. The cone was mounted remotely behind the nostrils and a long clear plastic (flexible) ducting was routed back to the intake. How about mounting the cone on the cool side of the car and running insulated flexible duct in front of the radiator and around to the
: business end of the 535. Just thinking out loud.
