Traction became available as an option starting in '91, (but rare), so did pre-wired security system and CD player connections as well as BMW phone. The e34 cars are thought by many as the best (fun to drive and reliable) 5 series made. Generally speaking, the 3.5L engine is rock solid. Keep the maintenance up and she will serve you well for hundreds of thousands of miles. If you like aggresive driving, you'll get alot out of going to 17" rims and good tires, also, the e34 body is much stiffer than the e28 but still could use some help with stiffening the chassis. Biggest bang for the buck is a strut tower brace, then more aggressive struts, then springs (consider Dinan, only lowers body .75 inch and are linear rate), then thicker sway bars. And of course if you like more power, the 3.5L engine chipped gets you ~40+ horsepower more in the higher rpm's and 20+ ft-lb of torque in the lower rpm's. One other item that makes a significant difference is extrude-honing the intake manifold. Significantly (seat of the pants) added torque to the lower rpm range.

Great car! I hope you find this helpful.

: : I am considering buying a 89-93 535i and I was wondering if traction control was a factory option on the 535i, and if so, what years was it available in?
: : Also, what are some of the trouble areas with the 535s that I should be aware of when looking for one?
: : Thanks in advance.
