Ugh... Coolant Overheat (archive)

On my drive home from work (a whopping 4.5 miles), I got a message on my dash indicating the coolant temp was high. Sure enough, the needle was near the top end of the scale. It looked as though the temp continued to climb during the last 1.5 miles.

Fan clutch? The outside temp was in the upper 40's(F), so I'd be surprised if the fan was needed. Water pump? That'd be my guess.

No other indications of trouble. Is this something I can trust to a local mechanic to repair, or should I get a tow to a BMW dealer/specialist?

Car trouble is never fun, but now is a particularly BAD time for this to happen...

Dave
